Hi there! I’m working on a post-apocalyptic Cooking Mama and need a few tips on accessories. I’m planning to make a utility belt to hold various cookware and utensils, as well as a grenade belt for vegetables and spices. Any idea on how to get started on them? Thanks in advance!

Hello there!

This is a really cute idea, and I’m going to open it up to our followers for ideas on what types of items would be good.

As for ideas on how to make them, you can get fake fruit and vegetables in the floral section of many craft stores, or you can make your own out of clay or other materials. For spices, you can easily find empty spice jars at most stores that sell home goods, or you can purchase online in bulk, and then fill with colored sand or other materials. For utensils, I’d advise you to get wooden and plastic items as much as possible (and plastic spice jars rather than glass), since these will be more likely to accepted at a con.

This page has a lot of ideas on bandoliers and utility belts. Bandoliers would be easy enough to make – it’s simply a strip of fabric with loops – and would be fun for spice jars and long vegetables, like carrots and cucumbers.

I would also recommend doing a bit of weathering on your outfit and your props to make them look more realistic in a post-apocalyptic setting – here’s all our weathering tutorials.

I hope that helps! And if people want to give more suggestions on items to bring, feel free :]
